About this site

This is a small independent guide to one square in Bologna and the things within a short walk of it. It is written and maintained by one person, independently.

It is not run by the Comune di Bologna or the city’s tourist office, by any of the churches, museums, palaces, restaurants, shops or hotels it describes, or by a tour operator. Nobody pays to appear on it.

How we decide what goes on the site

Every page starts from primary sources: the building’s official site, the city’s museum listings, and the Italian and English record where it exists. Where something is repeated everywhere but we cannot find a source for it, we say so on the page rather than passing it along. There is a lot of that in Bologna, and some of it is our favorite material, but folklore gets labeled as such.

Opening hours and prices carry the date we checked. Those change without warning, so we link to the official page and tell you to confirm before you go.

We only write about places we can describe usefully. If a page would be padding, it does not get published.

Tours and how we make money

Tours and tickets on this site link to GetYourGuide. On pages that link to hotels on booking sites such as Booking.com, a script from Stay22 may turn those links into affiliate links. Tell us when we are wrong

Prices go up, hours move, a shop closes. If you find something out of date or plainly wrong on this site, email info@piazzamaggiore.com with the page and what you saw. Corrections are welcome; we would rather hear it from you than leave it standing.
