Privacy policy

Plain version: this is a static site with no accounts and no forms. It uses Google Analytics 4, it counts clicks on affiliate links, its tour links and tour widget come from GetYourGuide, and pages that link to hotels may load a script from Stay22. Details below.

What we do not collect

There is nothing to sign up for on this site: no accounts, no newsletter, no contact form and no comments. We do not ask for your name, your email address or anything else, and there is no database here holding your details.

If you email us at info@piazzamaggiore.com, we have your email and whatever you wrote in it. We keep it long enough to reply and deal with what you wrote about. We do not add you to any list.

Google Analytics 4

We use Google Analytics 4 to see how many people visit, which pages they read, and roughly where in the world they came from. We look at that in aggregate, as counts and charts, and we make no attempt to identify individual visitors.

Google Analytics does this by setting cookies in your browser and sending Google information about your visit, including your IP address. Google uses that address to derive coarse location data, city, region and country, and states that it does not log or store IP addresses from visitors in the EU, Switzerland and the UK.

On top of the standard page views, the site sends one custom event, called affiliate_click, when you click a tour or hotel link. It records which partner the link goes to (GetYourGuide, Stay22 or a hotel’s own site), where on the page the link sat, which page you were on, and which tour or hotel page it pointed to. It records nothing about you beyond what Google Analytics already collects for the visit. We use it to see which links people find useful.

Google processes this data under its own terms, which you can read in Google’s privacy policy.

You can opt out with Google’s browser opt-out add-on, or by blocking analytics scripts with a browser extension or your browser’s tracking protection. The site works fine either way.

Tour links on this site are affiliate links. When you click one, parameters identifying this site and the place on the page the link came from are added to the URL, so that GetYourGuide can attribute a booking to us and pay the commission described in our affiliate disclosure.

Our tours page also shows a list of activities supplied live by GetYourGuide. When you scroll near it, your browser loads that list and its scripts from GetYourGuide’s servers, and GetYourGuide can set its own cookies at that point.

Once you are on GetYourGuide, or looking at its widget, you are under GetYourGuide’s privacy policy. We do not receive your personal details from them. What we see is a count of bookings, not who made them.

Some pages link to hotels on booking sites such as Booking.com. On those pages a script from Stay22 may load. It converts the hotel links into affiliate links for Stay22’s booking partners, and in doing so it can read technical details of your visit and set its own cookies, under Stay22’s privacy policy. The script does not load on pages without hotel links.

If you click through and book, the booking site handles your details under its own privacy policy. We do not receive them.

We link to official sites for the buildings and services we write about, including museums, transport operators and the Comune di Bologna. Those are ordinary links with no tracking added by us, and once you follow one that site’s privacy policy applies.

This site is independent. It is not run by the Comune di Bologna or by any of the places it describes, and none of them receives data from us.

Selling data

We do not sell personal data, and we have none to sell.

Changes and questions

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top. For anything you want to ask about it, including a request to have an email exchange deleted, write to info@piazzamaggiore.com.
