How to Get to Piazza Maggiore from Bologna Centrale

Almost everyone reaches Piazza Maggiore the same way: off a train at Bologna Centrale and on foot down one long, straight street. It is 1.5 km, it is flat, and you can do most of it under cover.

Walking distances, fares and times below were checked in October 2026. Fares and bus routes change, so use the official sites linked in each section before you travel.

Directions from Bologna Centrale to Piazza Maggiore

1. Leave the station by the front entrance. You come out on Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro.
2. Cross to Via dell’Indipendenza and walk south. It runs almost straight toward the center.
3. Keep going past Via Augusto Righi and Via de’ Falegnami. From there the street is pedestrian, which it has been since December 2025.
4. At the end you reach Piazza del Nettuno and the Neptune Fountain. Piazza Maggiore opens directly beyond it.

We measured the route with OpenStreetMap’s walking router in October 2026: 1,512 meters from the station to the middle of the square, about 20 minutes at a steady adult pace. If you come off the Marconi Express platform, add a few minutes; that start point is 1,782 meters from the square.

There are no hills and no steps. Porticoes cover most of the route, which matters more than it sounds like it should, because Bologna gets real rain in November and real heat in July. Via dell’Indipendenza is also the main shopping street, so the walk passes quickly. For a quieter version, drop a block west onto the parallel side streets and rejoin near Via Ugo Bassi.

The pedestrian stretch reopened after works for the new Linea Rossa tram, which is due to run through it in 2027.

Train times to Bologna Centrale

Bologna Centrale sits on Italy’s main high-speed line, which is why so many people pass through it. Italo’s own route pages give these times (Checked October 2026):

The “from” fares are Italo’s promotional minimums, not what most people pay on the day. Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains run the same routes and we did not check their times, so compare both operators for your date.

Florence is the one that changes how you plan. At 37 minutes plus the 20-minute walk, a Florence to Bologna day trip puts you in Piazza Maggiore within an hour of leaving, with the whole day left. By bus from the station

We are deliberately not naming a bus line. TPER has rerouted the center repeatedly during the tram works, and the walk is only 20 minutes.

If you do want a bus, a single ticket cost €2.30 in October 2026 and is valid for 75 minutes. It is €2.50 in coins from the machine on board, and you can tap a contactless card where the bus is marked for it. Check tper.it for current routes and stops.

From Bologna Airport

The Marconi Express monorail runs from the airport to Bologna Centrale in about 7 minutes, from 5:40 to midnight every day. A single cost €12.80 and a return €23.30 when we checked in October 2026, and every ticket includes 75 minutes on TPER city buses, so the bus on from the station is covered. From the station it is the walk above.

The airport lists no daytime bus to the station or the center: by day, bus Q runs to Ospedale Maggiore and line 54 to Villaggio Speranza. From midnight to 5:40, while the monorail is shut, bus Q runs to the station instead.

Driving, the ZTL and parking

Do not drive to the square. It sits inside Bologna’s ZTL, the limited traffic zone, where cameras photograph number plates from 7:00 to 20:00 every day. Via Rizzoli, Via Ugo Bassi and the pedestrian streets around the square are closed to cars at all hours. A visitor day ticket costs €6 (Checked October 2026), but it has to be bought online before you enter and it does not cover those streets.

The simplest plan is to park outside and walk. Piazza VIII Agosto, the big underground car park north of the center, charges up to €25 a day and is about 13 minutes on foot from the square; Ex-Staveco, on the ring road to the south, caps at €12 a day and is about 16 minutes away (both Checked October 2026). Once you are in the square

Everything on this site is within a short walk of where you will be standing. The Basilica di San Petronio fills the south side, the Neptune Fountain is at the northwest corner where you arrive, and the Due Torri are about six minutes east along Via Rizzoli.
