Bologna Parking: Where to Park Near Piazza Maggiore and How the ZTL Works
Do not drive into the center.

For a first visit, stay on or beside Piazza Maggiore: Hotel Roma and Art Hotel Commercianti are two to three minutes' walk away. Pick Santo Stefano or Strada Maggiore for quiet nights, Via Zamboni for bars, and the station end for early trains. Drivers should book a hotel that registers their plate for the ZTL.
The best area to stay in Bologna for a first visit is the old center around Piazza Maggiore and the Quadrilatero market streets. Hotels there sit two to four minutes’ walk from the square, and everything a short trip needs is closer still. Choose Santo Stefano or Strada Maggiore if you want quiet nights, the university quarter around Via Zamboni if you want bars, and the station end if you have an early train or a car you would rather keep out of the traffic zone.
The center is small. The farthest hotel on this page, opposite the station, is about 20 minutes’ walk from the square. So this is less a choice of neighborhood than a choice of trade-offs: noise, stairs, parking and how often you want to walk back for a rest.
Walking times below were measured with OpenStreetMap foot routing in October 2026, from each hotel to the middle of the square, at a steady adult pace.
| Area | Walk to Piazza Maggiore | Noise | Parking and the ZTL | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The square and the Quadrilatero | 2 to 4 min | Busy. The square fills on Friday and Saturday evenings and hosts the summer open-air cinema | Inside the ZTL. Several hotels register your plate or run a garage | First visits, short stays |
| Santo Stefano, Strada Maggiore, San Domenico | 8 to 17 min | Residential and quieter | Ask each hotel about parking and plate registration | Quiet nights, couples, longer stays |
| University quarter (Via Zamboni) | 7 to 16 min | Bars around Piazza Verdi stay loud late, mostly in term time | The Zona Università is restricted 24 hours a day | Nightlife, budget, the Due Torri end |
| The station and upper Via dell’Indipendenza | 13 to 20 min | Depends on the street | The Excelsior sits on the ring road, outside the ZTL | Early trains, one-night stops, drivers |
Term time in Bologna runs roughly October to May, which is when the student quarter is liveliest. In summer the square is the noisy one: Sotto le stelle del cinema ran on about 57 evenings from 15 June to 14 August in 2026 (see when the open-air cinema runs).

Most of the hotels above are inside Bologna’s ZTL, the camera-enforced limited traffic zone. Cameras at 17 entry gates check plates from 7:00 to 20:00 every day, and the pedestrian zones and the T streets beside the square (Via Rizzoli, Via Ugo Bassi and part of Via dell’Indipendenza) are closed to cars around the clock.
The fix is simple. Send the hotel your plate before you arrive, and it registers the car with the city so the camera does not fine you on the way in. That covers the drive to the hotel only. To leave the car in a blue street bay, hotel guests can buy a €9 daily parking pass at the hotel that includes a TPER daily bus pass (checked October 2026). The parking part runs 24 hours from validation.
