Almost every day. The Quadrilatero food streets behind Piazza Maggiore keep normal shop hours, Mercato delle Erbe opens its stalls Monday to Saturday from 7:00, and La Piazzola, the big outdoor market, fills Piazza VIII Agosto every Friday and Saturday. A farmers’ market adds Saturday mornings, and an antiques market comes once a month.

The food markets next to Piazza Maggiore

The Quadrilatero is the closest. It is Bologna’s old market district, a grid of narrow lanes such as Via Pescherie Vecchie, Via Drapperie and Via Clavature directly behind Palazzo dei Banchi, reached from the square through its arches. It is not a market with set trading hours. Each deli, baker and greengrocer opens on its own schedule, so check ahead if you are going on a Sunday. Our Quadrilatero guide covers the shops street by street.

Inside it, the Mercato di Mezzo on Via Clavature is a covered food hall on three levels, reopened in 2014. Sources disagree on Sundays: Bologna Welcome lists Monday to Saturday, while italia.it says it opens every day.

The easiest way to eat through the area is with someone who knows which counter to stop at. A local food tour with tastings and wine comes in a short express version or a longer sit-down one, both through the Quadrilatero.

Mercato delle Erbe, about eight minutes’ walk west on Via Ugo Bassi, is a covered market for fresh food. Its stalls open Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 19:30. The building in its present form was designed in 1910 and reopened in 1949 after wartime bomb damage, and its restaurants stay open into the evening and on Sundays.

Is there a market in Bologna on Sunday?

Only some of them. The Mercato delle Erbe stalls close, but its restaurants open for Sunday lunch and dinner. The antiques market on Piazza Santo Stefano runs on the second Sunday of each month, except in July and August. Quadrilatero shops vary, and the Mercato di Mezzo may or may not open depending on which source you trust, so treat Sunday as a day for eating rather than shopping.

La Piazzola, Bologna’s flea market

La Piazzola is the big one: more than 400 stalls on Piazza VIII Agosto and up the slope of the Montagnola park, every Friday and Saturday all year, from early morning to sunset. Bologna Welcome lists vintage, second-hand clothing, leather jackets and military wear on the Montagnola side, and low-priced clothes, shoes, accessories, flowers, jewelry and tableware on the square. A city ordinance from 2014 set its trading hours at 8:00 to 17:00.

The site has a long history as a market. Bologna Welcome records a cattle market there in 1251, and the region has declared La Piazzola a historic market of Emilia-Romagna. It is about 13 minutes’ walk north of Piazza Maggiore.

The farmers’ market and the antiques market

Mercato Ritrovato is a farmers’ market at the Cineteca di Bologna, the city’s film archive, on Via Azzo Gardino. More than 50 local producers sell directly, on Saturday mornings from September to June and on Wednesday evenings from April to October.

The Mercato Antiquario Città di Bologna spreads across Piazza Santo Stefano and the streets around it on the second weekend of the month, outside July and August. Expect small antiques and collectibles: walking sticks, postcards, dolls, old lace, photographs and old magazines. The square fronts the Santo Stefano church complex, so it pairs well with a visit.

More questions

Where can I buy fresh pasta in the market streets?

In the Quadrilatero, behind Piazza Maggiore. Paolo Atti & Figli on Via Drapperie, a family bakery and pasta shop since the nineteenth century, sells fresh tortellini. Tamburini on Via Caprarie, run by the same family since 1932, sells fresh pasta alongside its cold cuts and cheeses. Both are within a few minutes of the square.

Can you eat at Mercato delle Erbe?

Yes. The covered market on Via Ugo Bassi has restaurants as well as stalls. They serve lunch from 12:00 to 15:30 and dinner from 18:00 to midnight, and they also open on Sundays, when dinner ends at 23:00. The produce stalls themselves close on Sundays, so come Monday to Saturday to shop.

Does La Piazzola run on public holidays?

Not always. Bologna Welcome says the market runs every Friday and Saturday except when they fall on certain holidays, but it does not list which ones. If your visit lands on a holiday weekend, such as Easter or around Christmas, check the Bologna Welcome page or ask at the tourist office on Piazza Maggiore.

Is there a Christmas market in Bologna?

Yes, several. The oldest, the Antica Fiera di Santa Lucia, sets up under the portico of Santa Maria dei Servi on Strada Maggiore from 6 November to 27 December 2026. Smaller Christmas fairs open in late November and December, including one on Via Altabella, a few minutes' walk from Piazza Maggiore.
