Michelangelo worked in Bologna twice, and only half of what he made there survives.

He first arrived in 1494, aged 19, having left Florence as Medici rule collapsed. A local nobleman, Giovan Francesco Aldrovandi, took him in and found him work finishing the Arca di San Domenico, the marble tomb of Saint Dominic in the Basilica di San Domenico, which Niccolò dell’Arca had left incomplete. Michelangelo carved three figures for it: a kneeling angel holding a candlestick, a Saint Proculus, and a Saint Petronius that Niccolò had begun. All three are still there.

He came back in 1506, after Pope Julius II had taken Bologna from the Bentivoglio family, to make a bronze statue of the pope. It went up over the central door of the Basilica di San Petronio in 1508. In 1511 the Bentivoglio returned, the statue was pulled down, and the bronze was recast as a cannon nicknamed La Giulia. A plaque in Piazza Galvani, beside the Archiginnasio, marks where he made it.
